Itineraries - Mountain bike - Val Maone (crossing from Campo Imperatore Pietracamela to Montorio al Vomano)
"... As we climbed that, if we look back, our view widens sull'intiero plateau and discovered, in all its splendor, great bulk of the Gran Sasso ... "
(Ignazio Silone, in the land and the people in Abruzzo)
This route is part of the route that connected, in past, the basin and then Aquilana with Pietracamela Teramo. You were leaving the pitch to Assergi Portella then went down to Campo Pericoli and Val Maone to Pietracamela. De Marchi, in 1573, describing the ascent to the peak 1 ^ Western Corno Grande, recalls that the villagers of Pietracamela descended the snowy slopes along the valley of the Portella, straddle rolls of cloth - the carfagni wool, which reached dall'Aquila Tuscany and European markets. In addition to control the steep descent of the Pretaroli used sticks and iron with the tip applied to the heel spurs, ancestors of the current spikes.
The itinerary kicks off the arrival of the cable car Campo Imperatore (the time now closed for renovation), where we can find the hotel where Mussolini was imprisoned between August 28 and September 12, 1943, and where the operation took place which led to the liberation of oak dictator ( More ), the arrival of the old cable car Fonte Cerreto - Campo Imperatore built between 1934 and 1936 (Ceretti and Tanfani), the Church of Our Lady of the Snows (the Church's highest in Europe) and the Centre.
From there take the steep path that leads to the ref held Duca degli Abruzzi property of Sec. Rome's position on the crest of the Portella at elevation 2388 ( More ). Once at the shelter opens a spectacular view of the Corno Grande, Campo Pericoli, Intermesoli, Monte Corvo and the valley of the Eagle. From here you take the right path (to go absolutely to push some exposed) that shortly after reaching the saddle, and then change the slope of Mount Eagle. The seat could be reached with the path "summer" that cuts through the hillside below the ridge but it is certainly much more crowded, uncomfortable and less spectacular.
From here follow the trail to Rifugio Garibaldi (currently unmanaged and closed) was built in 1886, the first refuge of the Gran Sasso, which is reached quickly. continue on a spectacular single track until you reach the lower range of hazards with huts, construction of pastors who take the cattle to high altitude (Singles ministry complex, evidence of the attendance at these places since prehistoric times. And 'between the sites higher up in Abruzzo, consisting of five huts in the dry stone resting on large boulders and blocks bounded Outside runs from stone).
Then take the Val Maone, closed to the right and left of the Little Horn imposing walls of the pillars of Intermesoli (where they are among the most complex climbing routes of the group). It passes by huge boulders and always continue on the path to reach the source of the River Arno to see the falls requires a detour of a few minutes. From here, instead of continuing on the valley floor to go up the dirt road to the right that leads us to the forest in a short and a rapid descent to Prati di Tivo.
From the square in Prati di Tivo, where there is a fountain, and you can refresh themselves in the many clubs there, but especially admire the north wall of the Little Horn where you are written some of the heroic pages of mountaineering Gran Sasso, back on the pavement and take the path (reported) on the right that goes to the hotel lawns down and then read the first in a clearing, and then you enter the forest From here you follow a single track with some difficult passages until you reach the village of Pietracamela.
The country saw the birth of Pietracamela in 1925 a group known as the Gran Sasso eagles, one of the first groups of climbers were born in Italy just think that the famous Cortina Squirrels are the 1939 and the 1946 Spiders of Lecco. ( depth).
From here you can proceed in various ways for the Vomano Montorio, on the road or still on a path to Cerqueto and then a paved road.
The recovery of the car is very long (over 60 km).
The route is also a classic ski mountaineering and a summer suggestive.

Notes
The route is entirely in the Park Nazionale del Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga and footpaths particularly crowded, so you must act accordingly without damaging the environment and respecting walkers (remember that those who go up the mountain takes precedence).
